$25,000 prize pool up for grabs in Lake Art Prize 2022
Published on 06 July 2022
Applications for the acquisitive Lake Art Prize are now open and creators from across the country are invited to enter the competition.
Museum of Art and Culture yapang Curator and Operations Coordinator Courtney Wagner said this year’s theme of The Vessel: contained within and moving between invited artists to explore literal and lateral translations of a vessel.
“The sky really is the limit for artists this year,” Ms Wagner said.
“The vessel can be portrayed literally through an object such as a form of a receptacle or intangible concepts, such as an image that could represent a memory or the notions of life, death and passage.”
Artists working across all mediums, including sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, installation and sound, are eligible for the prize.
Lake Macquarie City Council Arts Producer Lake Arts Precinct Martina Mrongovius said artists aged 18 and over could take part in the competition.
“Council will purchase the winner’s work, and if the creation is valued at less than $25,000, we will look to purchase other outstanding entries from the competition,” Ms Mrongovius said.
“All finalists will have their work form part of an exhibition at MAC from Saturday 24 September to Sunday 11 December.”
Museums and Galleries of NSW CEO Brett Adlington will be among the expert judging panel.
Last year’s inaugural competition saw more than 600 artists from across Australia enter.
Ms Mrongovius was confident this year’s instalment would attract even more entries.
Applications close Monday 22 August, with finalists announced Monday 29 August.
The winner will be announced Friday 23 September.
