Held on the traditional lands of the Awabakal People, the Living Smart Festival is one of Australia’s largest community sustainability events, with a mission to encourage people to learn about and embrace everyday sustainability practices.
The annual event showcases a range of hands-on workshops, demonstrations and speakers, featuring some of Australia’s most prominent and innovative personalities in the field of sustainability.
This year's event saw thousands of people flock to Speers Point Park, where Logie Award-winning War on Waste presenter, Craig Reucassel, inspired the crowd with his talk about the small things people could do to make a big difference to the environment.
The day also included a bumper program of sustainability-themed panel talks, presentations, workshops and demonstrations on topics including permaculture, backyard native habitats, sustainable cooking, First Nations teachings, pollinator projects, low-tox cleaning and much more. The annual school garden bed competition proved a hit, as did a native plant giveaway, with thousands of native seedlings handed out to Lake Mac residents.
Now in its twelfth year, the Living Smart Festival created some big numbers across the event:
- 2000+ native plant giveaways
- 34 sustainability workshops and presentations
- 113 market stalls
- 600+kg of textiles diverted from landfill through upcycling activities
- 17 local school communities involved in the garden bed competition
- 1100+ votes in the school garden bed competition
- 12 electric vehicle display models
- 14 preloved fashion market stalls
