Lake Views is a major solo exhibition conceived for the Museum of Art and Culture yapang by artist Luke Adams who currently lives and works in Victoria. This project was developed following Adams' Lake House Artist Residency with the city of Lake Macquarie in 2022.
During this residency Adams spent quality time in his hometown suburb of Speers Point which offered some expedient creative reflection, as well as allowing for a rediscovery of personal foundations within local landscapes and suburban streets. Bringing his own broader cultural knowledge to re-evaluate key signifiers of local identity, Adams was struck by the visual magnetism of the lake; once again.
Many aspects of the artworks in this exhibition are drawn from the nostalgic sentiments of growing-up in this area.
A distant stare across the lake, a good sense of humour, and a sort of informal formality are elements being explored. Through the use of both experimental and traditional modes of art production Adams has sought to create works that share a Lake Macquarie sensibility; one that is distinct from neighbouring cities and retains uniqueness amongst the influence of global trends.
