No barriers to participating in this year’s Me2 program

Date posted: 11 January 2019

Inclusive events ranging from belly-dancing and theatre workshops to croquet and healthy cooking classes are on offer as part of Lake Macquarie City Council’s 2019 Me2 program.

Launched in 2017, the program aims to build the networks and skills of people of all abilities and ages.

Council Ageing and Disability Officer Peta McGrath said last year’s month-long program had more than 500 participants, with events held at venues across the City.

“Me2 aims to be a meaningful addition to the lives of participants, to support them and include them in our community,” Ms McGrath said.

“This year’s program is spread across 10 months to provide options over a greater period of time to a broader audience.”

More than 11,500 people in Lake Macquarie – comprising more than six per cent of the population – need assistance with self-care, mobility or communication.

Ms McGrath said that was above the NSW average.

“Thankfully, attitudes and behaviour towards people with disability have changed significantly in recent years, and programs like Me2 help continue this positive trend,” she said.

This first five months of this year’s program include healthy cooking presentations in February, croquet in March, an Easter picnic in April, belly-dancing and drumming classes in May and theatre workshops and a puppet show in June.
