Lake Macquarie City Council’s Living Smart Festival has been confirmed as one of the best events in Australia with the announcement of National Finalists in the 2018 Australian Event Awards.
The Festival has been announced as a finalist in the Coates Hire Best Community Event category, which aims to recognise the benefits through community building and community engagement achieved by an event.
Council’s Manager Cultural Services, Jacqui Hemsley, said it is significant for the community event to be recognised at a National level.
“Now in its eighth year, the Living Smart Festival is Lake Macquarie’s largest free community event, celebrating environmental sustainability,” Ms Hemsley said.
“Through this community festival, we hope to empower people to build a healthier and cleaner City.”
The winners of the 2018 Australian Event Awards will be announced in a ceremony on 21 November 2018.
Lake Macquarie City Council has also been named a finalist in the Sports NSW Awards as Local Council of the Year for excellence and innovation in the promotion of sport and active recreation.
Council’s Manager Community Planning, Andrew Bryant, said Lake Macquarie is defending its title of Sports Council of the Year after taking out the win in 2017.
“To be recognised at a State level for the significant achievements we have in the sporting space in Lake Macquarie two years in a row is a real honour for our City,” Mr Bryant said.
“In the past 12 months, we’ve delivered more than $26 million in upgrades to our swim centres, sport fields, parks, playgrounds, cycleways and aquatic areas.
“We’ve developed partnerships with our local community to increase our capacity to manage the large number of sporting facilities we have across the City, which equates to almost $2 million in people power each year.”
The NSW Surf Life Saving Championship hosted at Blacksmiths Beach has also been announced as a finalist in the NSW Sports Awards for Event of the Year.
Surf Life Saving NSW partnered with Council, the Lake Macquarie Economic Development Board (Dantia), Your Local Club and Swansea Belmont Surf Life Saving Club to deliver this event.
The winners of the NSW Sports Awards will be announced in a ceremony on Tuesday 27 November.
