Happy healthy workplace
The health and wellbeing of our employees is important to Council. We offer a variety of health and wellbeing activities to our employees such as an annual flu-vaccination program and a Corporate Fitness Club including in-house meditation and Pilates classes.
Corporate Fitness Club
We have a Corporate Fitness Program available to all interested temporary and permanent employees and their families. The Corporate Fitness Club has been in operation since 2004 and is self-funded by its members.
A single membership will entitle the employee to attend specified gyms and pools as often as he or she likes. A family membership will entitle the employee, his or her partner, and any dependent children under the age of 18 to attend the specified gyms and pools as often as they like. Proof of age of dependent children may be required and the partner and children must reside at the same address as the employee.
Staff social club
The staff social club offers a chance for all new and current staff members to mix socially outside the work environment. Various functions are organised by the self-funded club throughout the year to enable staff to get together in a friendly social atmosphere.
Work Health and Safety
We are committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, contractors, volunteer workers and visitors to the workplace. All employees have an obligation to follow safe working procedures and to look after each other. Employees must follow safe work practices and procedures and not take any action to create a risk or increase an existing risk to themselves or others.
Equal Employment Opportunity
We are committed to providing a workplace that is free from discrimination, by promoting diversity and fostering an environment where all employees have positive working relationships with other staff. This will be achieved in an environment where everyone is treated fairly and where a culture of mutual respect applies. Council aims to ensure that when employment decisions are made, they are based on merit and without discrimination.
Our Equal Employment Opportunity Management Plan underpins Council's Equity and Diversity Policy and Procedure and builds on previous efforts to develop a culture that is supportive of these principles.
Bullying and harassment
We are committed to providing a workplace where people are treated with fairness, dignity and respect.
We value and understand diversity and equal opportunity in the workplace and will ensure that policies, procedures and actions reflect and value the social and cultural diversity within Council and the community. All employees must treat each other with dignity, courtesy and respect, and it is the responsibility of all managers and employees to uphold these values.
Alcohol and other drugs
We want staff to work safely, in a safe place. To assist with this, we have a Fitness for Duty (Drug and Alcohol) Internal Policy and Procedure. Employees at work should not be affected by alcohol or other drugs that may affect the way they perform their work.
Some prescription medicine can affect work performance and employees should find out from their doctor or pharmacist whether medication might affect their work performance and advise their supervisor. Operation of some machinery is prohibited if affected by certain medications. Employees must tell their supervisor if they think they or another person is under the influence of alcohol or other drugs and pose a risk to the safety of themselves, other employees or the public.
Smoking in the workplace
We aim to provide a safe and healthy working environment where employees are not exposed to tobacco smoke. For this reason, smoking is not allowed in any Council office, building, vehicle, plant, employee accommodation and specific work sites.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
This program provides assistance through short-term professional counselling for employees and members of their immediate families, who face problems of a work or personal nature. The EAP is an offsite service that offers confidential and professional assistance to employees.
