Water and sewage

Hunter Water Corporation manages Lake Macquarie's water and sewage infrastructure. Residents enjoy good quality drinking water and reticulated sewage in most areas. If you're experiencing water supply issues, Hunter Water provides information on outages.

Electricity

Eraring and Vales Point Power Stations are located in western Lake Macquarie.

Ausgrid, along with a number of other service providers, manages the electricity for the region and ensures service consistency to both households and businesses. You can report a faulty streetlight directly to Ausgrid.

Telecommunications

The City's landline telephone network offers Integrated Switch Digital Network (ISDN) to the majority of homes and businesses and the digital mobile network offers exceptional coverage across the City.

Health

Public hospitals

John Hunter Hospital is the region's largest hospital. Home of the only trauma centre and children's hospital in regional NSW, it has over 550 beds, an emergency department, a neonatal intensive care unit and children and adolescent mental health unit (Nexus).

Belmont Hospital has 75 beds and offers general medicine, surgery, GP after-hours service and a 24-hour emergency department. It provides coronary care, gynaecology, obstetrics, and neonatal services.

Toronto (Westlakes) Community Health Services provides health services for the western side of the lake, and offers community nursing, child health nursing, an ante-natal clinic, pathology services, rehabilitation and drug and social work.

Private hospitals

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital has a private 24-hour emergency department.

Warners Bay Private Hospital offers a comprehensive range of specialist medical, surgical, rehabilitation and mental health services.

Charlestown Private Hospital incorporating Hunter Eye Hospital offers specialised care for elective surgical patients and includes a dedicated extended recovery area, specifically designed for overnight admissions.

Toronto Private Hospital offers on-site medical, palliative, rehabilitation and mental health services,

Education

Public, catholic and independent infant, primary, and high schools are dispersed throughout residential areas of the city. Catholic and independent education is available as well as opportunities for technical, tertiary, and further education.

The University of Newcastle has a student population of more than 25,000 and is ranked in Australia's top 10 universities.

Hunter Institute of Technology is the largest provider of vocational education in the Hunter. There are 15 campuses in the Hunter region, two being in Lake Macquarie at Belmont and Glendale.

Avondale College is an educational institution of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. With a five-star rating from the Good Universities Guide and a student population of 1200 students, the largest of its three campuses is located in Cooranbong.
