The Windale Hub, bilyabayi will be a high-tech facility featuring flexible social spaces and library functions.

Designed as Windale’s community lounge room, it will provide a safe, relaxing and welcoming space for people to come together to learn and create. 

Built on the former Windale Community Hall and Windale Library sites, the history of the area will be subtly woven into the facility’s new look.

Features

Windale Hub, bilyabayi will feature:

  • an upper library and lower library space with community lounge areas, reading lounges, small group study areas, a kids’ collection, a media collection and access to new technology
  • a range of adaptable community spaces including:
    • a large community hall opening out to a deck area
    • an activity room for gatherings and functions, as well as a ‘maker space’ activities
    • smaller sound-proof meeting room for possible use as a recording studio
    • offices
  • a commercial kitchen
  • car parking and landscaping

Timeline

  • 2017 - Consultation undertaken with local community
  • 2018 - Draft concept designs developed for community feedback
  • 2019 - Consultation on draft concept design
  • 2020 - Further consultation with key stakeholders
  • 2021 - Development application approved, and competitive tender process undertaken
  • 2022 - Construction started in February 2022
  • 2024 - The Windale Hub is expected to officially open to the community in 2024

Frequently asked questions

What will the new building feature?

The new facility will feature modern library facilities, as well as flexible community spaces including a large community hall and an activity room for gatherings and functions as well as ‘makerspace’ activities, small meeting room for possible use as a recording studio, and offices.

When is the new building expected to be complete?

We anticipate the new Windale Hub, bilyabayi, will officially open to the public in 2024.

How much will the new building cost and how is Council paying for it?

The $10 million project is being funded through the sale of land and development contributions, providing an opportunity to provide a modern and flexible facility for many users.

Will there be parking at the new building?

Yes, car parking has been considered as part of the building design. There will be 26 car parking spaces available including 2 accessible car parking spaces.

Has Council consulted with the community on this project?

Since 2017, there have been several opportunities for the community to provide input into the design and development of the Windale Hub, bilyabayi. We have also worked closely with key user groups and service providers to ensure the facility will meet their needs.

When will the library re-open?

The library will form part of the Windale Hub, which is expected to be completed in 2024.
