Council received funding from the NSW Government to address legacy lead contamination resulting from the operation of the Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter.

Funding was allocated to conduct a project to remediate public land impacted by legacy lead contamination.

There are five project phases as per below, with Council now in the final phase of implementation.

  • Phase one - Identify public land within the Lead Abatement Strategy (LAS) area impacted by legacy lead contamination from the Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter.
  • Phase two – Conduct soil testing to determine the lead in soil levels on public land impacted by legacy contamination from the Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter.
  • Phase three- Develop a prioritisation matrix for the remediation of public land impacted by legacy contamination from the Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter.
  • Phase four - Develop a schedule of remediation works for public land impacted by legacy contamination from the Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter.
  • Phase five - Implement remediation schedule and appropriately remediate contaminated land to reduce legacy lead contamination risk.

Seven sites within the LAS area have been identified for remediation works.

These works are scheduled to commence in mid-April 2025 and are due for completion by early 2026.
