Positioned within the geographical heart of the Lower Hunter Region, Lake Macquarie's North West Catalyst Area is earmarked to become a thriving lifestyle, retail and employment hub for our region.  

This area offers a rare opportunity to deliver a once in a generation urban renewal – providing new retail, services, advanced manufacturing, knowledge-based jobs and affordable housing close to recreation and public open space. 

In the next 20 years, this catalyst area is anticipated to deliver: 

  • 6000+ potential new jobs
  • 4000+ potential new homes
  • $1.8 billion in economic benefits to regional NSW and the State
  • 450ha+ urban renewal land and
  • substantial residential development opportunity

Council is committed to realising the potential of the North West Catalyst Area and its role in achieving targets in the Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan 2036. We are creating an environment where public and private sector, big business and small, will work side by side to provide innovative, positive outcomes for our city – helping us grow and thrive in years to come.

1. Cockle Creek Precinct

Our vision 

The city’s defining landmark promoting Lake Macquarie’s leading role in the region and State. It generates excitement, attraction of visitors, workers and customers from outside of the city. It creates new housing and employment opportunities, contributing to the economic diversification and development of the city.

2. Cockle Creek West Precinct

Our vision 

A future business and industry hub for Lake Macquarie and the Hunter region, with potential to sustain a significant number of new jobs and homes.

3. Glendale Retail and Sports Precinct

Our vision

A place to work and play, with a vibrant mix of retail, commercial, entertainment and sporting facilities. Stockland shopping centre, Event Cinemas, restaurants and the Hunter Sports Centre generate activity and visitation that make the precinct a lively destination by day or night. Surplus commercial lands provide an exciting investment opportunity to realise the completion of the Glendale regional centre.

4. Glendale-Argenton Renewal Precinct

Our vision

A desirable lifestyle precinct for young people and families to live, work, play and learn. The Glendale-Argenton Renewal Precinct provides home-buyers with opportunity to build or renovate in an area close to education facilities and with strong natural and recreational assets. It offers affordable and diverse housing choices in close proximity to the Glendale Retail and Sports Precinct.

5. Cardiff Advanced Industry Precinct

Our vision

A busy advanced manufacturing, technology and co-working cluster that is one of the region’s largest employment nodes. Strategically located to serve regional, national and international markets with good transport connectivity and access high-speed, fibre-delivered internet.

6. Cardiff Mixed-use Precinct

Our vision

An inviting, pedestrian-friendly main-street business and retail precinct that supports a mix of jobs, services, facilities and experiences. Surrounded by an established urban area with a diversifying housing mix. Good bus and rail connections serve a mobile workforce drawn to the area by its amenity and affordability.

7. Boolaroo-Speers Point Precinct

Our vision

A premier destination for cultural, recreational and lifestyle offerings with Speers Point Park at its heart. A walkable community with expansive open and recreational space, sports and cultural facilities, serviced by an efficient transport network. Vibrant local centres and mixed heritage aspects and modern development meet in an area offering diverse housing choices.

8. Teralba Precinct

Our vision

Its enhanced landscape and heritage character create an attractive and unique place to live and play, with a revitalised town centre and boutique businesses.
