A boat disguised as a high-performance aerobatic plane, ready to compete in the World Air Race, will lead the vivid flotilla at Float Your Boat this weekend.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said the vessel, decked out with thousands of lights projecting a plane and gates, was a unique way to launch the event.

“Our lake is a giant stage that attracts amazing events to our region on the water and soon to be in the air with the Word Air Race here in November,” Ms Hemsley said.

The boat is one of 22 taking part in the two-day festival, with a red kangaroo, sea eagle, spaceship, tiger and a cowboy riding a marlin also set to float on water.

Sam Luker from Trinity Point Water Taxi said his team would be transforming their water taxi into an illuminated road taxi for the event.

“Ideally, we will have glowing wheels that propel as they hit the water,” Mr Luker said.

“This is the first time we will be using the water taxi at the event, which will be great to be part of the community.”

The flotilla will set sail from Marmong Point Marina each night and will travel to Wangi Wangi on the Friday and Belmont 16s on the Saturday.

This year’s weekend will include a range of shore-based activities, with a Friday night live-site at Royal Motor Yacht Club Toronto and surrounding areas.

Warners Bay will host another live-site on Saturday.

Both the Toronto and Warners Bay live-sites will run from 6-9.30pm and feature local musicians and performers, entertainment, food trucks and children's activities.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the event would be one of the best the community has ever seen.

“The weather is looking exceptional with two sunny days forecast for Friday and Saturday, so I am encouraging families and friends to come out and enjoy all Float Your Boat has to offer,” Cr Fraser said.

Boats participating in Float Your Boat will be in the running to win a $2000 Newcastle Permanent People’s Choice Award, a Mayor’s Best Boat Award for vessels 5-10m, and a Mayor’s Best Boat Award for vessels over 10m.

Viewers can vote for their favourite online at from Saturday evening.
