Just in time for Children’s Week 2020, Lake Macquarie City Council has drafted its Children and Families Strategy and is asking the community for feedback.

Council’s Acting Community Planner Children and Families Erin Peterson said Children’s Week was the perfect time to recognise and celebrate kids in the Lake Mac community.

“Not only do we have our Children and Families Strategy going up for exhibition, but we have also created a range of activities and resources for families to enjoy for the week,” Ms Peterson said.

The strategy, which has been drafted from community feedback provided earlier in the year, will help to inform how Council connects and supports families.

“We asked the community for feedback on what they wanted to see improved for kids in Lake Mac,” Ms Peterson said.

“Through this next stage of engagement, we will continue to work collaboratively, to ensure we are providing the best support possible.”

Children’s Week 2020 is also being celebrated through a series of events and resources for the community to enjoy.

Story Walk is an interactive adventure held at Toronto Foreshore and Speers Point Promenade. Written by local authors Lynn Jenkins and Debora Kelly, families can follow their story designed on footpath stickers as they go for a walk.

Council has also created the Glenrock Cultural Walk, a downloadable flyer for families to use when going for a walk at Glenrock. The flyer provides fun facts and information on the cultural aspects of the area and is available at

“We wanted to make sure Children’s Week 2020 had multiple elements for the community to enjoy and interact with Council,” Ms Peterson said.

“With more than 55,000 families living in Lake Macquarie, supporting education and family service providers, and encouraging children’s development and wellbeing are vital.”

To comment on the draft strategy, head to by 28 November.
