Winsome’s labour of love is protecting the natural wonders of Lake Mac
Growing up on a sheep farm near Cowra, NSW, Winsome’s love of nature grew from her cherished relationship with her Nana. “We would spend so much time chatting and tending to her enormous garden.”
Luckily for Lake Mac, when Winsome moved close to the Floraville ridge and rainforest reserve, she started turning this passion into action; establishing it as a Landcare site over 20 years ago. As a co-ordinator she also cares for several other Landcare sites. A doer through and through, she’s been an active committee member of Lake Macquarie Landcare Volunteer Network for over 10 years and recently received the Hunter Region Individual Landcarer Award for her outstanding leadership and commitment.
Motivated by a deep love for the environment and genuine sense of responsibility to protect it, Winsome is an inspiration and loves seeing the progress she’s made with her family,
“When we first started we would bring home two sacks full of rubbish each week, and now we only collect a handful.”
Winsome‘s passionate about educating the community too, writing ‘Landcare Matters’ column in her villa’s newsletter each month. She’s even been immortalised by locals who’ve named the trail ‘Winsome’s Way’, in honour of all her hard work.
“I just love Landcare, it provides me with so much joy! Being completely immersed in nature, listening to and watching the beautiful creatures around me. Every visit is a wonder.”
