Thank you James

James, is making the surf safer for locals young and old.

Growing up surfing and living at the beach, James McMorland is now living his childhood dream while contributing positively to his community. As a Senior Beach Lifeguard for Lake Macquarie City Council, he ensures his local Caves Beach is safe for everyone in the community. He describes Lake Mac’s beaches as some of the best in Australia.

From May to August each year, James and the Lifeguards team visit public schools around Lake Macquarie and teach water safety to kids in Kindergarten, Year Three and Year Six. They receive a lot of positive feedback from teachers and parents, “It’s really rewarding being able to educate kids in our community about the dangers of the surf and what to look out for.”

James and his team get involved in a variety of charity events every year, such as the Evolution Cup run in conjunction with Surfest. The team take part in a surf competition to raise money for the Mark Hughes Foundation and brain cancer awareness. As part of a great cause and an event with lots of friendly competition, James is chuffed to represent Lake Mac. “It’s a great day – Council really get behind us and it’s awesome to be a part of a good cause. The last two years we’ve been lucky enough to take away the win!”

James performs rescues and emergency care when required and is passionate about building relationships and trust with the people in our community. “I’ve always wanted to find a career where I could contribute positively to my community. Theres nothing like saving someone’s life and receiving the most heartfelt thank you.”
