Dog Education Brochure for schools email.jpeg

Paws and Learn is a free educational program for primary school students.

About the program

Owning a dog is a wonderful experience, but it comes with significant responsibilities.

We're offering free instruction to help children understand the responsibilities of owning a dog, basic dog care and how to safely approach dogs and avoid risky situations.

Course overview

Paws and Learn runs for 45 minutes (30 minutes presentation with 15 minutes question time).

Aim

  • To provide students with a general understanding of how to approach dogs, read their body language and interact with them safely
  • To teach the responsibilities of owning and caring for a dog
  • To provide First Aid training
  • To provide a fun and interactive experience for children with our Rangers

Outcome

By the end of the session students should be able to:

  • Understand different types of dog behaviours
  • Identify the key responsibilities of owning and caring for a dog
  • Identify harmful foods for dogs
  • Identify who in the community can help in relation to dog matters

The program is presented by Council’s Rangers and is suitable for children in Years 3, 4 and 5.

With the help of ‘Spots the dog’ (soft toy,) this hands-on session gives children the chance to get involved and to try out the different types of dog control equipment Council Rangers use.
