Weed management

lantana

A weed can be defined simply as a plant that is growing in the wrong place. Some weeds are declared priority weeds due to their impact on human health, agriculture or the environment. Widespread weeds in Lake Macquarie include Asparagus Fern, Lantana, Madeira Vine, Morning Glory, Privet and Blackberry.

What's the difference between declared priority weeds and environmental weeds?

What does Council do about weeds?

We plan, manage and control declared priority and environmental weeds within the city to ensure compliance with all relevant Acts, regulations and standards, and can help you identify weeds on your property. Lake Macquarie Landcare work with the community to manage weeds on public reserves.

When it comes to controlling weeds, early detection is key. Detecting weeds early means a better chance of controlling the infestation. We encourage residents to report known priority weeds, if you see a plant but require assistance with identification, we are happy to help.

Our role in weed management and responsibilities include -

  • Educating the community about weeds risk and best practice weeds management
  • Inspect all lands, including rural and residential areas for priority weeds.
  • Controlling priority weeds on Council land
  • Submit reports to the Biosecurity Information System as per the NSW Metadata Standard
  • Participate in regional strategic weeds management through the Regional Weed Committee.

Priority weed inspections

We undertake routine property inspections on all land throughout the city to identify priority weed infestations and manage their growth. We always encourage property owners and occupiers to be in attendance during an inspection, this way we can answer any questions you may have.
