WildLife by James Price

WildLife is a delightful new immersive moving image work by artist and storyteller James Price.

Through his own distinctive graphic language, Price is able to articulate intricate ideas loaded with pathos, humour and humanity. His moving image works, paintings, sculpture and ceramics visually articulate modern life for those of us unsure whether we should laugh, cry, or do both at once.

Created specifically for The Cube, a 360-degree digital exhibition space at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima, Price’s latest work WildLife asks the question ‘what if our emotions create their own environment?’.

The experience is dazzlingly beautiful, thoughtful and fun.

Underwater bubbles drift into birds flying by. The shimmer of stars merge into schools of fish, feelings bloom like plants and flowers, and reactions and thoughts flit through the space like swarms of bees.

WildLife invites audiences to explore the ephemeral, never ending, and ever-evolving patterns of our emotional responses. The work draws strong parallels between the natural world – in all its beauty, diversity and interdependence – with the range and complexities of our own human emotions.

Price is excited to share this new work with the Lake Macquarie community, encouraging them to reflect on what place emotions play in their lives and offering an opportunity to reframe their feelings in new and surprising ways.

About the artist

James Price is an unapologetically skilled storyteller. His artistic practice employs a distinct, vibrant graphic language that condenses the complexities and contradictions of our times.

Price sharpened his storytelling skills working across the world as a globally recognised commercial artist, including a decade working from his own highly successful studio in New York. He’s created work for some of the worlds most recognised storytellers and organisations, including: Netflix, MTV, The BBC, The Washington Post, TED, Nike and our own ABC.

As an accomplished public artist, Price has created activations, murals, moving image commissions and site-specific installations for communities across Australia. Highlights include a 23-metre moving image commission for Wynyard Station in Sydney through Transport NSW, large-scale mural works for the Lake Macquarie and Broken Hill communities, and an animated film reflecting on ideas of social isolation for The City of Melbourne.

Price’s recent gallery work draws a charismatic parallel between the classic historical western form, the pictorial naivety of folk art, and the idiosyncrasies of our evolving contemporary culture. Created for a time when our bodies are heavier and our attention spans lighter, Price’s newest works question, clarify, illuminate and lampoon our contemporary form.
