Sounds of Colour

Students of the Creative Arts High Potential and Gifted Education Program of Warners Bay High School bring you 'Sounds of Colour'.

Sounds of Colour is an innovative multi-arts event featuring musical performances, installations, light and soundscapes. It is the culmination of a series of workshops held at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima (MAP mima) and Warners Bay High School, and collaboration with multi-disciplinary artist Wanjun Carpenter and Dr Luke Hespanhol.

The event commences at 3.30pm, with evening performances from 7pm. Bring a rug or a chair, and picnic hampers for two are available for pre-purchase directly from Harry and Lola’s Cafe.

About the project

The Creative Arts High Potential and Gifted Education Program engaged students across years 7-11, who attended a full-day workshop at MAP mima, a full-day Incursion at Warners Bay High School and concurrent workshops after school on Monday afternoons. 

Students worked hands on with MAP Mima Curator Pippa Budge and Cultural Experiences Officer Jessica Lakatosh, along with artist Wanjun Carpenter. 

Carpenter had recently completed an artist in residency at MAP Mima and collected sounds and imagery from the location, many of which have been immersed into the installation, Sounds of Colour. 

As part of the experience the Aboriginal Dance and Didge group of Glendale High School performed for the students in The Cube at MAP mima.

At school, the students worked in groups that focused on various elements of the event:

• The Graphic Design team designed and collaged all of the promotional material and liaised with media to advertise for the event.
• The Film and Installation team created the installation you will view in The Cube space and on The Node.
• The Sound and Music Production team composed the soundscape for the North Wall to accompany the light installation.
• The Dance students choreographed a contemporary dance that has been layered into the installation
• The Software and Coding team worked directly with Dr Luke Hespanhol to code the Catenary lights to a sequence designed by the students.
• Junior students in the program created the weaving works you will see along the balustrade as you enter the gallery from the rampway.
