Want to make the best sand castles on the beach this summer?

Join master sculptor Steve Machell for a sand sculpting workshop and then put your new skills to the test in a fun, family friendly sand sculpting competition. Your team will have 75 minutes to create your competition entry.

Bookings essential. Arrive early to register. Bring two buckets per person.

Competition categories: Family group (max. two adults, four children) and open (up to six adults).

E vent program:

  • Registration 2.30 - 3.00pm
  • Skills workshop 15 mins (allocated on registration, either 3.15 - 3.30pm, or 3.30 - 3.45pm) 
  • Sand-sculpture competition 3.45- 5.00pm
  • Winners announced 5.10pm

Important participant requirements:

- This event is suitable all ages

- The event is free

- All attendees at the event require a ticket. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Please be considerate and book no more than 2 activities per person across the two week Explore Our Great Outdoors program to give other people in our community the opportunity to enjoy this program too.

- This event is for Lake Macquarie City residents, others may be waitlisted.

Competition rules:

  • 2 categories: family (max. two adults, four children under 15 years of age, and open (up to six people).
  • Please bring two buckets per person
  • Please bring hats, wear sun safe clothing, sunscreen and drinking water 
  • Sculptures to be constructed of sand and water only.
  • Sculptures may not be wetted down or sprayed with any solution other than water.
  • No shells, seaweed, rocks, other materials or tools to be used.
  • Maximum plot size 3m x 2m
  • Dunes are out of bounds.

- Attendees should follow the most recent COVID-19 safe advice from the NSW Government including not attending if you feel unwell, safe physical distancing by keeping 1.5m apart and maintaining personal hygiene by regularly washing your hands.

- Council reserves the right to cancel the event in the event of unsafe conditions, including dangerous weather or COVID-19 outbreak.

- Please provide your mobile number so we can SMS you with an event reminder and/or advise of cancellation. This is the only purpose your number will be used for.
