Some of our services are taking a short break over Christmas and the New Year. There are no waste, recycling and green waste collections on Christmas Day. All waste collections between Wednesday 25-Friday 27 December will occur a day later than usual.
Our Customer Service Centre is temporarily located at Speers Point Library, adjacent to Council's Administration Building.
Holly Macdonald's ceramic sculptures communicate through a considered and playful use of colour, shape, scale and texture. In the same way that our emotional state is in constant flux, the installation Feeling Objects will be added to and shifted around the internal wall and discovery portals of the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima (MAP mima) over the course of summer.
Entry is free. Bookings not required.
This project is assisted by Create NSW.
Holly Macdonald is a visual artist living and working in Newcastle on Awabakal and Worimi Country. Her practice is founded in ceramics and combines handbuilding in clay with installation, drawing and performance to explore the fragile nature of perception. Holly is concerned with material agency and what we might learn about ourselves and our world from a collaborative approach to working with soft and responsive materials such as clay.
Holly grew up between Warrang/Sydney and Wanaruah Country/Upper Hunter. In 2021 she relocated to Newcastle from Naarm/Melbourne. She completed a BFA (Honours) at RMIT in 2017. Since then Holly has exhibited work throughout Australia including solo exhibitions at Firstdraft and Sabbia Gallery, both in Sydney, and undertaken residencies in the Northern Territory, France and Belgium. Recent collaborative outcomes include HERE NOWwith maker and designer Harriet Watts at The Creator Incubator, Newcastle, and Converge/\Diverge with contemporary dancer Rosslyn Wythes at The 16thAustralian Ceramics Triennale in Mparntwe/Alice Springs.
Living, travelling and making art in diverse places and contexts has played an important role in expanding and informing her understanding of clay's capacity to foster communication and connection across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
