Animal and Ranger Services
Being a pet owner is extremely rewarding, but it is also a big responsibility. As well as caring for a companion animal, owners are also responsible for their pet’s behaviour and registration with Council.
Our city rangers can visit your home to microchip your pet and answer your questions about responsible pet ownership.

Ranger Services
Ranger Services
In addition to animal control, our city rangers perform a wide variety of duties, and are primarily responsible for enforcing legislation. They offer a range of services to help you resolve problems in regards to dog related matters, littering or rubbish dumping offences, and abandoned vehicles.
Lake Macquarie City's rangers are also responsible for the following areas:
- illegal dumping of rubbish
- light-traffic roads and illegal parking
- straying stock
- animal (domestic) control
- footpath obstructions
- city patrolling
- abandoned vehicles
- emergency management response
- restrictions on public reserves and roads
- enforcement of legislation
Abandoned animals or animals picked up in the street will be impounded at Council's animal holding facility. This facility is also for voluntary surrender of animals.
School Visits
Rangers also visit local schools to teach children about responsible pet ownership and animal handling, in fun and interactive workshops. If you would like the rangers to visit your school, or if you would like to know more about any of the services they provide, please call 02 4921 0333.
