What is GreenPower?
- It is an environment-friendly alternative to coal-powered electricity
- It is clean electricity and cuts greenhouse gas emissions
- It comes from harnessing renewable resources, such as wind, water, and the sun AND...some energy providers give 10% GreenPower at NO EXTRA COST!
How It Works
The majority of electricity produced in Australia comes from burning fossil fuels like coal and gas. Currently, only 8 per cent of the electricity fed into the electricity grid is from renewable sources and most of this is from hydro-electricity schemes that are decades old.
Renewable energy, as an emerging technology, is at a cost disadvantage compared to its established, environmentally damaging competitors, which has benefited from the legacy of government ownership and continues to enjoy generous government subsidy and support.
However, the more people that purchase GreenPower the more support is given to the renewable energy industry and the demand for electricity from the burning of fossil fuels is reduced. For every kilowatt-hour of GreenPower-accredited electricity you purchase, one extra kilowatt-hour of renewable electricity must be fed into the grid.

How GreenPower Helps the Environment
- 10% GreenPower is similar to leaving all your lights off for a whole year
- 50% GreenPower is equivalent to leaving your car in the garage for a w year.
- 100% GreenPower is similar to leaving all your lights off, avoiding the use of all electrical appliances, and leaving your car in the garage for a year.
- In 10 years time, we hope to have reduced the city’s carbon footprint to the equivalent of taking over 300,000 cars off our roads.
