Greening Lake Mac - free native plants

Date Posted: 4 September 2012

Lake Macquarie residents will have the opportunity to pick up two free native plants at the Native Plant Giveaway on Saturday 15 September.

Council will give away more than 5000 plants at this year's Giveaway, which will take place at three different sites to give residents plenty of opportunities to receive their free plants.

Council's Manager Sustainability, Alice Howe, said native plants help to improve your backyard habitat.

"We will have a variety of plants available to choose from and, since we're coming into spring, it's a good time to get into the garden," Dr Howe said.

"More importantly, native plants contribute to a healthy ecosystem by providing food and homes for native birds, animals and insects."

The Native Plant Giveaway will take place at the Living Smart Festival at Speers Point Park, as well as sites at Belmont and Morisset.

The Living Smart Festival aims to raise awareness of sustainability issues through music, art, fashion, food, market stalls, workshops and a native plant giveaway.  This year's theme is "Your sustainable home and garden".
