Restoring the dunes at Caves Beach

Date Posted: 3 July 2012

The local community and Landcare volunteers enjoyed stunning beach scenery and kept an eye out for whales as they helped restore coastal dunes at Caves Beach on Wednesday, 4 July.

Caves Beach Dunecare and Lake Macquarie Landcare are focusing on dune maintenance and weed control as they reconstruct native plant communities on the dunes and improve biodiversity in the fragile area.

Lake Macquarie Landcare Coordinator, Jason Harvey, said sand mining had previously disturbed and degraded the dunes.

"Many people are unaware of the link between the quality of our beaches and oceans and the quality of dune plant communities.  The plants are essential to stabilising sand blows and provide a vital habitat for the animals on these coastal edges," Mr Harvey said.

"It is always great to see the support of the community on these projects.

Bahtabah Local Aboriginal Land Council, Lake Macquarie Landcare, and Lake Macquarie City Council support this project through funding from the Australian Government's Caring for our Country program.
