Mayor of Lake Macquarie

Councillor Greg Piper, Mayor of Lake Macquarie

Elected as the Mayor of Lake Macquarie in March 2004 and again in September 2008, Independent Councillor Greg Piper was first elected to council in 1991 and served as Deputy Mayor through 2000. He has been very active on council, sitting on and chairing, numerous Council and State Government committees.

Greg has always had a strong focus on the natural environment, and it was this that led him to stand for Council initially. A major focus for Greg has been the remediation of the lake.  He has been chairman of the Estuary Management Committee and the Lake Macquarie Project Management Committee since their beginnings in the 1990’s. One of his proudest achievements is the outstanding improvements to the lake.

He understands that there are huge future demands on the city because of rapidly increasing population growth, and is very aware of the need to balance this development pressure with the protection of the natural environment and the relaxed nature of our city.

Though time is limited, Greg remains a keen social tennis player and enjoys reading, photography and travel.  His greatest enjoyment is to spend time with his family including his granddaughter, Lilla.

In March 2007 Mayor Piper was also elected as an Independent to the Legislative Assembly of the NSW Parliament as the Member for Lake Macquarie.
