Waste Minimisation
There are many things you can do to minimise your household or business waste, which benefits the environment, and your hip pocket.
Did you know?
- Plastic bags are made from non-renewable sources such as crude oil, gas and coal.
- Australians are the second highest producers (behind America) of waste, per person, in the world - each of us send approximately 690 kgs of waste to landfill each year.
- By placing food, greenwaste and kitchen scraps in a compost bin or worm farm you can reduce what you send to landfill by over 40%.
How can I help?
Easy ways to make a difference:
- Compost your kitchen scraps.
- You can recycle many household and business items.
- Worm farming is also a great way to recycle food scraps, and nourish your garden.
- Pay bills on line; it's convenient and saves paper.
- BYO bag - say NO to plastic bags, contact Council for a free calico bag (while stocks last).
- Take advantage of many of Council's waste disposal and recycling programs to get rid of clutter.
- Be creative and think of different ways to recycle waste.
- Avoid products with excess packaging.
- Check out Lake Macquarie’s Recycling Directory for what can be recycled and where.
- Place a no advertising material sticker on your letter box. Contact Council for a free sticker (while stocks last).
- Read all the resources available through the Waste Minimisation, and Waste and Recycling Sections of this website.
