Planning for floods in the Jewells Wetland area

Date Posted: 3 July 2012

Do you have a story about flooding in the Jewells Wetland area?  Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking information on flooding and drainage from current and past residents of that area to inform the development of a standardised flood study.

Council’s Acting Manager Sustainability, Sandie Pitter, said the Jewells Wetland Flood Study will be prepared under the NSW Government’s Floodplain Risk Management Program.

“The study will look into the nature of flood risk in the area by providing information on the level and velocity of floodwaters, and establish data for development controls to ensure flood risk in the future is not worsened by ongoing development,” Ms Pitter said.

“Any historical information such as when flooding occurred, how deep it was, even photographs or videos of flooding in the Jewells Wetland area would be helpful.

“Once a draft of the study is prepared later this year, Council will place it on public exhibition to allow the community to provide feedback.

“We will also hold a public forum during the exhibition period to hear from people interested in the study.”

The area in question incorporates the suburbs of Jewells, Redhead, Bennetts Green, Windale, Mount Hutton, and Gateshead, including Scrubby Creek, Crokers Creek, Johnsons Creek, and Jewells Wetland.

Information can be forwarded to Council via email, mail, or in person by the close of business on Monday 30 July 2012.
