Get FREE Help To Save Power

Date Posted: 24 January 2012

Pensioners and low-income families in Lake Macquarie can learn how to manage rising energy costs through the free Home Power Savings Program.

The program offers households a kit of power saving devices such as a standby saver power board, shower timer, water efficient showerhead, tap aerator, and draught stoppers that come fully installed at no cost.  Households can also spend an hour with an energy expert in their home who will test the running costs of appliances and provide tailored advice to the household.

Council’s Manager Sustainability, Alice Howe, said Lake Macquarie pensioners and families on a lower income are facing increasing pressure when it comes to the cost of living.

“We’re encouraging all eligible people to take part as they could save around $265 a year on their power bills,” Dr Howe said.

“There are more than 16,500 eligible households in the area and with the funding we’ve recently received from the NSW Government, we’ll be able to reach these households and encourage them to join the program.”

The Home Power Savings Program is available to eligible Centrelink and Department of Veterans’ Affairs cardholders, as well as social housing tenants and energy utility hardship customers.
