Environmental Research Grants

This program aims to support environmental management in Lake Macquarie.

It is expected that the research results will assist Council to develop appropriate land use practices, plan remedial and preventative works, and/or adjust management strategies. 

Who can apply for grants?

University students and other research organisations are eligible to apply for the grants.

How much money is available?

Previously supported projects have received grants ranging from $1,000 to $20,300.


What are the research priorities?

Research priorities are determined by the Lake Macquarie Research Grants Committee made up of representatives of Council, state government departments, the University of Newcastle, and industry. 

Issues identified as needing research include: 

  • the effectiveness of environmental management strategies
  • water quality
  • air quality
  • biodiversity
  • sustainable design and living

What types of projects are eligible for funding?

To qualify, projects must be research.

This means there is normally a literature review, data gathering, data analysis, and interpretation in a scientifically rigorous way. The grants are intended to cover out of pocket expenses or "consumables" such as printing, costs of undertaking fieldwork, fuel, chemicals for laboratory analysis etc. Durables such as computers, software etc. are not eligible for funding.

The Lake Macquarie Research Grants Committee.

When are the grants available?

Applications for the current round closed on Tuesday 29 January 2013.  Information regarding the next round of grants will be available from October 2013.
