Council Meetings
There are two types of Council meetings:
- Standing Committee Meeting
- Ordinary Meeting of Council
The Mayor, councillors, and relevant Council staff attend Standing Committee meetings on the second Monday of every month. They also attend an Ordinary Meeting of Council on the fourth Monday each month.
Both meetings have an agenda and business paper. You can download a copy of the agenda and business paper online or obtain a hardcopy from Council’s Administration Building at Speers Point, on the Tuesday before the meeting.
At the meetings, councillors discuss, debate, and make decisions on issues of public importance or concern. Members of the community and the media can attend these meetings.
Standing Committee Meetings
Standing Committee Meetings incorporate the Corporate Services, Community Development, City Strategy and Operations committees. The meetings are less formal than Ordinary Council Meetings as councillors remain seated, and can speak more than once on a matter. Council employees submit reports to the Standing Committee Meetings for consideration and debate. At the Ordinary Council Meeting, held on the fourth Monday of each month, councillors consider the recommendation and may make a final decision.
Ordinary Meetings of Council
Council meetings are more formal than Standing Committee Meetings. The councillors can speak once, either for or against each motion, and must stand when speaking. At the meeting, councillors endorse or amend the recommendations from the Standing Committee Meeting held two weeks previously.
Anyone is welcome to attend the meetings held in the Council Chambers, Administration Building, Main Road, Speers Point.
